PAWS For Reading Program
The PAWS for Reading Program is one of the newest programs started
by Support Dogs, Inc. The purpose of the program is by having dogs
come into the classroom, acting as an incentive for the children
to read and write. Dogs are a non-threatening entity that promote
reading, writing, and increased interaction and social skills of
the classroom.
The dogs that participate in the program have been specially trained
to be "canine classmates". These dogs have to be especially
calm and unobtrusive to settle in as part of the class. The children
view the dogs as non-threatening, lovable, and non-judgmental, which
are the keys to success in this program.
Support Dogs, Inc. also has developed an incentive program for
the classroom in which children that read a specific number of books
receive a bonus, or special book of their choosing, and a certificate
signed by their canine classmate. If the child reads a high number
of books, a special book is donated to the school library in their
honor. The incentive program can stand alone or be used in conjunction
with a current incentive program already being offered by the school.

The PAWS for Reading Program serves children in local elementary
schools, ranging from first to eighth grades. Results have shown
an increase in reading levels and word recognition, a higher desire
to read and write, and an increase in practicing on their own to
be prepared for when their canine classmates arrive.
