Youth Service Dog Program

In 2000, Support Dogs, Inc. was receiving more and more requests from parents to provide trained companion dogs for their ill or special needs children. Support Dogs, Inc. responded by creating the Youth Service Dog Program. This program provides companion dogs to children under 18 years-of-age. These dogs are primarily used as companions, but do have basic service dog skills.

Although these dogs are placed primarily with the child, the placement is essentially a family placement. The child AND family must attend training classes before certification is given. Once certified, the child and dog are encouraged to attend ongoing classes at Support Dogs, Inc. to continue socialization and skills building. As with adult service dogs, Youth Service Dog clients are only charged a $50.00 application fee plus any equipment costs incurred during placement. .
